Refinishing Butcher Block Countertops

Image
Refinishing Butcher Block Countertops Despite popular belief, butcher block countertops should never be used as cutting boards or places to plop down your fruits, veggies, or meats to be prepared.  These styles of counters can hold germs deeper than laminate and can deteriorate MUCH faster if mistreated. So, when you come across a mistreated butcher block - what can you do? Well, you can either replace them or refinish them. It's as simple as that. That simple decision, however, can make you or break you. A new butcher block (especially in this pandemic with the wood cost being so high) can run you $750 for a 6-foot chunk of unfinished butcher block. Unfinished means bare wood. That means you still have work to do after you put it in. You need to either oil the heck out of it or choose to seal it with a lacquer (don't do this) or epoxy (a better choice).  If you choose to go the oil route, you'll be done in no time at very little cost. Epoxy takes ...

How to Restore Broken Deer Antlers

Image
How to Restore Broken Deer Antlers: Well hi!  If you've found your way to this post, you've probably broken a set of deer antlers ...sorry to hear that. I ended up with these antlers because the owner had accidentally broken them during a move. They've been sitting, broken, in a closet ever since. They ended up coming home with me so that I could do my best to put them back together. And I think I did a pretty good job.     T his fix isn't perfect, but it will definitely be passable and durable. The first thing I had to do with this set - is clean, clean, clean. Unfortunately - the owner decided to use gorilla glue to fix it. I ended up having to spend two days removing the expanded adhesive to get the two pieces even close to connecting properly. I used 100% acetone to soak it for 15 minutes at a time in an effort to break down the gorilla glue. That kinda worked. After I got what I could removed - I sanded the rest. There was also a ...

Sew your own fitted face-mask

Image
Fitted Face Masks ~ This post contains affiliate links~ My mother, over at thewretchedpath.blogspot.com  wrote a blog post the other day called Masks for the Multitudes. It's an amazing tutorial on how to make your own custom-fitted face masks. I prefer this style far more than the folded (yet much easier to make) mask because it forms to your face. I had a lot of fun customizing my own...you know for the coronapocolypse! Have to get my Mad-Max style going! If you get a chance, pop on over to her blog and check it out: The Wretched Path: Masks for the Multitudes ~*~ This tutorial might seem a little advanced for the beginner sewer, but I promise you, it's easier than it looks. I chose to leave out the wire in the nose piece, only because mine fit so nicely around my nose the way it was I didn't see any reason to add it. And those wire nose pieces can be irritating after a while. So if you don't have any wire on hand, don't feel bad...

Surviving the Chaos - Tips and alternatives when you run out of necessities

Image
The chaos seems to be everywhere today and unfortunately, there isn't any end in sight as of yet. If you're one of those on the losing end of the massive hoarding situations, here are some tips and alternatives to help you through. It's not much, but it's all I have right now and I hope it does some of you some good. Homemade Baby Wipes - Since adults are hoarding baby wipes to clean their adult behinds...here are a couple alternatives you can use: The first is obvious - a washcloth. I understand it's easier to use a cloth with pee, but if you're out of wipes and can't make your own, use it for the poo too. Making your own wipes - IF you can score some paper towels, cut a roll in half, work the cardboard tube out, put in a Tupperware and soak with a bit of baby oil and baby wash. Close the lid and use it as needed. Homemade toilet paper - This one pains me to write because the ridiculousness of the situation just leaves me in a state of awe about havi...

DIY Ice Lanterns ~ Winter family projects, Foraged Luminaries

Image
Let's make some Ice Lanterns! You will find instructions for the foraged luminary above at the end of this post. A simple instructional precedes it for the whole family to enjoy with a lot less work! Since I live in North Dakota and there isn't much to do for fun around here in the wintertime, I figured I'd share something that doesn't involve getting frostbite! Our weather lately has been pretty harsh. We just finished up with wicked blizzard number 3, luckily our power stayed on this time, and being cooped up inside has been getting to everyone. When it's -45 with the wind chill, you can't build a snowman, you can't go sledding, you just have to stay inside. Staying inside might sound great until you've been stuck in your own house with crabby, bored children for 72 hours...it's not all that great. One project I found that only required a few minutes of me being outside is making an ice lantern. My sister-in-law showed me hers a while ...
