The Great (or maybe not-so-great) Deer Hunt of 2020

Image
Deer hunting for us North Dakotans is supposed to be a family fun time of year. This year was a little bit different. Ok, a LOT a bit different. Let me sing you the song of this season... Nick and I both had buck tags to fill. We hunt to feed ourselves throughout the winter and sometimes for Christmas gifts - because everyone we know appreciates homemade orange cream jelly and deer sausage gifts.   We spent the better part of the first-week driving, driving, more driving, walking, walking some more, and getting a bit lost four or five times with not much luck on seeing those antlered beauties. Day 1 was pretty uneventful, to say the least. We saw a lot of the countryside, but no deer. Day 2, however, was a bit more interesting.  It started off with me throwing my back out trying to put on my Superman shirt. Cruel irony right there. It was pretty painful and took a good 8 hours to stretch it out enough to be tolerable. After it started to feel somewhat better, my husband s...

Our Little October Camping Trip

Image
Hello October Camping in October is nearly unheard of in North Dakota. We haven't had a nice Halloween month in years, yet this month, the temps were in the 70s. It may have been a tad windy and a little chilly at night, but there's nothing like flannel pajamas and a big bonfire to keep you warm. The leaves are changing quickly as the air continues to crisp. The yellows, reds, and browns are so incredibly beautiful in these latest of fall days we've had in quite some time .  A little wood to chop for the fire and a hot cup of coffee warms the soul on a chilly camping evening. The late morning sun shining through the orange leaves is a gorgeous contrast against the bright blue sky. Flannel pajamas are a must when the temperature drops, as well as a fire to keep the toes nice and toasty warm. Can't forget the opening of pheasant season so we can hunt for our campfire dinner. These feathers are some kind of beautiful and we thank this little bird for fil...

~Gardening for all places and spaces~

Image
~Spring planting is soon upon us~ Let's face it: we all know it's quicker and easier to buy your food at the grocery store, however  it is so much more satisfying to grow it yourself. So, what if you have limited space and you don't think that you have enough room for your own garden? Well~ there are many options and layouts out there for you to play with. Whether you're in a house with a good-sized yard, on a farm, in the middle of a city, or even in an apartment, there are always places and spaces to grow your own food. So let's take a look at your options! Plan your plants! First things first: you want to decide what kind of plants you want to grow. If you're looking more for a vegetable garden , make a list of the veggies you love to eat the most. If it's for the fruits, write down which ones you can't live without. This is more important that what kind of space you have and I'll explain that shortly. Once you get a list of your ...

Campfire Stew ~ Creamy Sausage and Vegetable Stew

Image
What is campfire stew?  Well, it's just a stew that I started cooking over a campfire at the lake with my family. It grew so popular that it has been requested at most camping expeditions and events. Serve this stew alongside my Viking Pie for your cool-weather dinner party. Honestly, you don't have to cook this over a fire...you can make it wherever you wish. It is   much more convenient to make in the kitchen. This recipe is SO versatile and incredible, you'll have people swarming your campsite (or dining room) to slurp up every last spoonful. AND it's fairly easy to make. I never wanted to give this recipe out. Ever. Never, ever, forever, never, ever. However...I get tired of it being requested so often that I'll just pass it along so folks can make it themselves. Not only is it delicious, but it is also surprisingly healthy. It is a low-carb stew and definitely doesn't taste like it! Here we go! Ingredients: 8 oz. cream che...

✫☼ ~Imbolc~ ☼✫ Day 4 & 5 | Pagan Holiday Celebration

Image
If you haven't had a chance to check out the first three days of my holiday celebrations, you can do so here:  My Week of Imbolc, days 1-3 It sure has been a busy week around here! I've continued with my pre-Spring purge and have made some fairly impressive progress. Between garbage and donations, we should have our spare bedroom/storage unit in working order come Spring! My bay leaf bowl altar is still burning strong and my bread is delicious. My daughters Kindergarten teacher asked for a loaf for her and the students to share and it was a hit! You'd think it'd be hard to part with, but when you end up with loaves as big as mine were...you're happy to donate for the sake of counter space.  Now, the exact date of Imbolc has been up to debate. Is it the 1st? Is it the 2nd?  Well - it is typically celebrated on February 1st, however with Groundhogs Day on the 2nd, it's been known to be moved along and that's ok! No matter what day yo...

✫☼ ~Imbolc~ ☼✫ Day 1-3 | Pagan Holiday Celebration

Image
We are, halfway to the Spring Equinox!  I know it seemed like Yule was so long ago,  however - don't worry, we are arriving at  Imbolc!  (Or Candlemas, if you prefer) I love this Sabbat. This is the time of year where we can welcome the sun, celebrate nature, wish for new growth, and bake and bake and bake! Such a comforting holiday, isn't it? Now, I am not a full fledged Pagan and I do not claim to be one. I do, however, appreciate every Pagan holiday as they are all centered around nature. Also, I have a very rich heritage and celebrating certain aspects of the double handful that makes up my list of nationalities brings me ultimate joy. I love learning about each one and finding that one thing (or set of things) that connects me personally to them. For this, I consider myself an Eclectic Unicorn. ❇ Every Sabbat I've celebrated in the past (aside from this years Yule) I've done so alone. Well, alone gets pretty lonel...
