DIY Soap Making Day
I took some time out yesterday to make some soap!
I made two medium-sized lavender bars and 20 (I squashed one) honey hearts for Valentine's Day.
I used a goat's milk base, that I purchased on amazon, purely because I don't want lye in the house around the kids.
For the lavender bars, I used 10 drops of lavender essential oil and a light purple soap coloring.
The honey hearts were mixed with honey of course and a pinkish soap coloring.
The molds I used were also purchased from Amazon. The hearts are silicone candy molds that work great for little soaps as well!
I melted the goat's milk base with a double boiler (microwave is far too inconsistent) and added the coloring half-way through. The essential oils were added last and cooked for an additional minute before ladling into the molds.
Getting them to come out of the molds like this is nearly impossible. If you've ever tried to pour anything into a candy mold - you know it makes a mess. Luckily, it's super easy to trim the spillage after the soap sets and they are removed from the mold.
I have SO many more molds to choose from, tons of colors, and of course oils and herbs to make some more.
Making soap at home is not only fun but satisfying to know that I hand-selected the ingredients. No added chemicals, no un-safe dyes, nothing extra than what I picked. Also, the goat's milk base is already pre-mixed with lye (you can't make soap without lye) so I don't have to worry about handling sketchy chemicals that could potentially cause burns. And I feel safer having a premixed base around the kids.
Eventually, I'll get them listed in my storenvy shop and keep my fingers crossed that someone else loves them as much as I do!
