Sharing is Caring - Parenting Law Rant

The laws of parenting...

One thing I don't understand in the raising children front ~
Why do we force them to share? Why do we make them give up what they have so someone else can have it? It's a weird thing to not understand because - sharing is caring, right? What I don't get is why should one kid HAVE to give their toy to someone else "just because" the other kid wants it? To me - that seems to be only teaching two things: 1. If you have something someone else doesn't have, you have to give it to that other person. 2. If you want something someone else has, you can eventually just take it away. That doesn't seem right to me. It should be a choice, not a rule. I've seen this happen so many times and unfortunately, I've done it a few times without thinking about it. In the end, I always feel bad for the child who had it first, because it's theirs. Why the h*ll should they have to give it away? Even for a short time? Make one child miserable so another child can be happy? Where is the sense in that?  Can't that other child be happy with something else? Now, don't get me wrong here... I encourage sharing, but I don't like to intentionally force it (mistakes have been made) unless it's like the last cookie or something...then they should totally share with me.  But, as far as things go - toys, books, whatever - I just don't get it. If a kid wants to share, that's awesome. That's wonderful. That's touching and heartfelt. But I don't think they should HAVE to. I don't think a child should learn to see something and just assume that they can take it because they were taught that they have to share. That everyone has to share. It seems wrong to me. I think they should be taught the IDEA of sharing and how it makes others feel.  Not to teach them that it's a necessity to share - because it isn't.

How do you encourage or teach the ideals of sharing in your house?
