My DIY Countertops
I was having a hard time yesterday with our countertops. And after freaking out about it a little bit on facebook....
"I need a nagging voice of reason to follow me around and tell me to shut the hell up. We're in the middle of the Bruce Jenner of all house renovations and my dumb as says, "Hey! I have a great fricken idea! We could save a lot of money if I just build our countertops...from scratch!"
No, Mary...this was not a good idea. Where were you nagging voice of reason? It was your job to say, "You shut your dirty mouth, Mary...we've got enough shit to do around here. You can pick a damn pre-made countertop like every other normal human being." You dropped the ball nag, you dropped the ball."
I finally figured out what I wanted to do with them. I was going for butcher block style countertops. Then we decided to inlay diamond plate (for some odd reason) and luckily that idea got thrown out. Then I thought, well I'll just fill the seams with stainable wood filler...and it did not stain.
So, I had a little bit of a freak out before I decided what I wanted to do. I measured and taped two lines at the seams. Then I took some leftover gray paint from our bedroom and some gloss black paint I found in the basement, rolled up a washcloth and marbled that shit. It took about an hour to get it all looking the way I'd wanted and when I peeled the tape off this morning - it looked awesome!
We are putting stone around the big kitchen window, so this little bit of marbling will match pretty well! I'm really happy with how it looks and pretty proud of my self for not screwing it up....again.
After I get the sink hole cut and the 6 foot chunk it meets up with finished, I can seal them both. I picked an amber tinted floor sealant for "scratch proofiness". I can't wait to see how it will look with the whole kitchen done!
We have all different kinds and shades of wood in this house, so matching them all perfectly doesn't really need to happen. We have pine walls and we're putting up cedar trim, we will have all different shaded pallet plank floors, hickory cabinets, and amber tinted pine countertops. I think we will officially be able to call it a cabin in the end. :)
