Industrial Style Butcher Block Countertop Project
What in the hell have I gotten myself into?.....This little 6 foot chunk of countertop is just the beginning of our homemade industrial style butcher block countertops. (long fricken name I know) The twelve foot chunk has been inconveniently placed in my front entry way and we've been tripping over it for three days now. I have to finish this piece and cut the corner angles where they meet up before I can move the big fellar.
What I'm doing:
I took two 2x10 boards and one 2x8 board. On the back, they are secured and straightened - I always end up with crooked wood - with angle iron.
The gaps where the boards meet will be filled with a matching wood filler and the whole top will be sanded smooth and evenly to take out any little humps, bumps or imperfections.
After that I get to router out the strips for the diamond plate inlay that will run from front to back and over the lip. I think I'm only going to put one strip on each end (about 6 inches in) so it doesn't end up to be too much. I'm not to sure about how well I'm going to accomplish this part, but it's what we've decided (for some odd reason) so it will be done.
After I get the lovely diamond plate inlaid and level with the rest of the countertop, it will be sealed with a high gloss spar urethane...like 8 coats of it.
Fun stuff, right?
I still have two more to go that will only be about 3 feet wide and be placed on each side of the stove, but those can wait for now.
I'm beginning to regret not being able to pick out an already made crappy laminate counter - because they were all super ugly. Some of them even looked like someone splatter painted them in different shades of baby poop. Picking one of them would have been a lot less work. More money - but less work.
Either way, these countertops will match the rest of the house and they will be unique, beautiful (hopefully) and I'll proudly be able to say - I made them myself! (even if they end up a bit wonky)
