Home Spa Day: Activated Charcoal and Hot Oil Treatment!
Home spa day is getting a little creative around here! I decided today was a good day to try adding something different to my usual face mask. Can you guess what it is? Yep! Activated charcoal!
Now I don't mean for you to grab a brick of coal out of your barbecue...that wouldn't do you any good at all. The charcoal I'm referring to is the kind made specifically for medical use.
I don't usually stray away from the norm, but I thought it was worth the try. There are MANY benefits of using activated charcoal and this is one of my favorites. For the skin:
- Extremely absorbent of toxins and matter
- Antibacterial
- Ideal for oily and acne prone skin
- Draws out impurities
- Heals pimples and prevents breakouts
- Anti-aging
- Reduces inflammation
- Evens tone and complexion
Alrighty, here we go!
- Take a few capsules of activated charcoal (I only needed 2, they go a long ways) take apart and dump into a bowl. This can be purchased at most health food stores and I also included a link at the end of this post where you can buy it directly off of amazon.com.
- Add 1 Tablespoon of 100% organic honey - I prefer Manuka because it has the most benefits when it comes to anti-bacterial properties and can also be found at link at the end of this post.
- Next add one Tablespoon flour (to thicken, you can also add baking soda-but NOT for sensitive skin)
- Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
- Add 1 teaspoon of Turmeric (can be found in any grocery store spice section)
- Mix all together into a paste and let sit a few minutes to thicken.
- Throw on an old shirt - probably a black one.
- Using a makeup brush, dip into the mixture and spread evenly on your face!
- Use as much as you need to cover every area - avoiding the eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Leave this on for 20 minutes
- Wash off with warm water and you're done!
**As I'm applying this - my 3 year old daughter comes into the bathroom. She looks and me with this what the hell look on her face and says, "You look like really really ugly with all that crap on your face...you should wash it off so you can be pretty again, mom." I gave her one of those really? smirks and kept my mouth shut.
Now on to the hot oil hair treatment!
Now on to the hot oil hair treatment!
I did both of these at the same time - applying the hair treatment first and the face mask second. The hot oil can stay in the hair longer than the mask should stay on your face, so if you choose to do both at the same time, stick with this order and it will work out perfectly!
Here's the recipe:
- 2-3 Tablespoons coconut oil (depending on your hair length)
- 2-3 Tablespoons 100% virgin olive oil
- 1 Tablespoon sugar (used to exfoliate the scalp, clean out follicles, and aid in hair growth)
- Heat all ingredients for 30 seconds and allow to cool for 1 minute.
- Find an area of your house that you don't mind covering in oil...hang your head upside down and apply the oil by either pouring, using handfuls (I do both) or a makeup brush you don't mind destroying.
- When you think your hair is thoroughly coated, massage into the scalp and make sure the ends are soaked as well.
- Leave on for 30 minutes and wash out with shampoo and condition as usual! (I use OGX Brazilian Keratin Therapy because it makes my hair feel amazing)
Both home remedies can be done twice a week. I wouldn't recommend any more than that, but less is just fine.
If you'd like a face mask for that extra boost of health and radiance try the Turmeric/Manuka Honey recipe! Brides in India use this regularly for that extra glow on their special day. The benefits of these home masks by far surpass those you can buy in a store. Going the "home spa" healthy route you know that you're not slopping a handful of nasty chemicals all over your beautiful skin.
In case you need a little help finding the honey, charcoal, and OGX:
