Log End Flooring

We have been remodeling a 100 and some odd year old house for the past four years and we're trying to do it in the cheapest and the most "do it yourself" way so we can afford the project and be proud of what we've done.

One thing I love more than anything in a home - is natural wood. That combined with stone is absolutely beautiful in my opinion. This is something that is being incorporated all over our home and I'm very happy with all of the decisions we're making. The outcome with be totally worth the work (even if it kills me in the process) and it will be something we can show off to our friends and family without being embarrassed. (our house is in shambles right now, basically gutted)

Our kitchen flooring is the part of this remodel that I'm most excited about. We are putting in a log end floor - or cob wood, however you prefer to name it - which I am individually slicing myself...oof.

If you're wondering what exactly a cob wood, or log end floor is  - let me show you.
At www.improvisedlife.com, they show many beautiful examples including the following:

This is a painfully time sucking process, but it looks so amazing in the end that it's worth the headache. I haven't yet decided if I want my fill in to be resin, grout, or small pebbles yet. But, when I get that far, I'll be sure to let you know.

Another exited thing I want to incorporate into our kitchen is a stone accent. Specifically one around the large window above our sink. Now my husband would NEVER approve an awesome round window like this because it'd be a huge pain in the ass to side around...but it's still beautiful and shows how I'd like my stone to be, not covering an entire wall - just a window accent:

I've always loved rustic/cabin style homes. That earthy feel makes them more cozy to me. Modern homes are nice as well, but they make me feel like I'm in a movie. Like these homes aren't even real and they were built to be on camera. I want a home that feels like a magical place that belongs to me and that's how we are going to build it.

For those of you who have taken on huge renovation projects, what were your design choices? Did you go with clean cut modern? Or did you pick a more country living style?
